As the dust settles on a disappointing 2025 season, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are already strategizing for a major comeback in IPL 2026. In a bold move that’s buzzing across cricket circles, CSK has expressed keen interest in bringing Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain and wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson into their squad.

What Sparked the Interest?

For the first time in IPL history, CSK finished at the bottom of the points table this season. With Ruturaj Gaikwad sidelined due to injury, the legendary MS Dhoni had to step in and lead the side midway. This turbulent season has prompted the franchise to rethink its player combinations — and Sanju Samson appears to be at the top of their wishlist.

CSK’s Statement on Samson

Speaking to Cricbuzz, a senior CSK official confirmed,

“We are definitely looking at Sanju. He is an Indian batter, who is a keeper and an opener. So if he is available, we will certainly have a look at the option of having him in our fold.”

However, the official also clarified that no formal trade discussions with RR have begun yet.

What’s Holding Back the Deal?

Sanju Samson was RR’s No.1 retention ahead of IPL 2025 at a hefty price tag of ₹18 crore. If CSK wants to onboard him, they’ll need to offer an enticing trade — something the franchise hasn’t finalized. As of now, multiple teams are said to be approaching RR for Samson, and the trading window is still open.

Samson’s IPL 2025 Performance

Despite RR finishing second-last in IPL 2025, Samson had a decent season personally:

  • Matches Played: 9
  • Total Runs: 285
  • Highest Score: 66 vs Sunrisers Hyderabad

He missed five matches due to a side strain injury and began the season as an impact sub. Leadership duties briefly shifted to Riyan Parag during his absence.
