Posted on July 16, 2025July 16, 2025 By Gkd Sports No Comments on Rohit Sharma & Virat Kohli Still Committed to ODI Cricket: BCCI Clears the Air After T20 Retirement

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli remain available for ODIs despite retiring from T20Is and Test cricket.

BCCI Vice-President confirms Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are available for ODI cricket despite recent retirements from other formats.

Highlights:

  • Rohit and Virat retired from T20Is and Test cricket, not ODIs.
  • BCCI confirms both are available for one-day matches.
  • Virat aims to play till the 2027 ODI World Cup.

After their retirement from T20Is post India’s glorious 2024 World Cup triumph, and their recent exit from Test cricket, speculation about the ODI future of Indian cricket stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli has taken center stage. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has stepped in to provide clarity.

BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla confirmed that both Rohit and Virat are very much available for One-Day Internationals (ODIs). Speaking to reporters in London during the ongoing England tour, Shukla said, “I want to make it very clear once and for all. The duo are available for ODIs.”

Rohit and Virat announced their retirement from T20 cricket after clinching the 2024 T20 World Cup title and later bid adieu to Test cricket ahead of the ongoing five-match Test series against England. Their back-to-back retirements left fans and pundits questioning whether they would continue in the 50-over format.

Personal Choice of Rohit Sharma & Virat Kohli

Addressing the concerns, Shukla reiterated that their decision to retire from T20Is and Tests was entirely personal. “BCCI never tells any player when or from which format to retire. That decision is left to the players,” he said.

He added, “We all miss Rohit and Virat, but it was their own choice. The good news is they are still available for one-day cricket.”

In his retirement note, Rohit Sharma had already hinted that he would continue playing ODIs. Virat Kohli too expressed his wish to represent India in ODIs until the 2027 World Cup in South Africa. This is seen as a promising sign for India as the team begins planning for the future while keeping experience at the core.
