Joe Root climbs to 3rd on the all-time Test scorers list as England dominate India in the 4th Test at Old Trafford.

Joe Root becomes the 3rd highest Test run scorer as England dominates India on Day 3 of the fourth Test.

Highlights:

  • Joe Root overtakes Rahul Dravid and Jacques Kallis in Test runs.
  • Root now 3rd all-time with 13,322 runs—57 behind Ricky Ponting.
  • England in control at 332-2, trailing India by just 26 runs

England’s Joe Root made cricketing history on July 25, 2025, becoming the third-highest run scorer in Test cricket. The 34-year-old surpassed Indian legend Rahul Dravid and South Africa’s Jacques Kallis in overall Test runs, as England seized control on Day 3 of the fourth Test against India at Old Trafford, Manchester.

Joe Root’s Milestone Moment

Root remained unbeaten on 63 at lunch, with Ollie Pope on 70, pushing England to 332-2—just 26 runs behind India’s first-innings score of 358. Root’s current Test run tally stands at 13,322, placing him behind only Ricky Ponting (13,378) and Sachin Tendulkar (15,921) in the all-time list. With only 57 runs to go to overtake Ponting, Root’s climb toward the summit continues.

His remarkable achievement comes amidst a dominant batting display by England, who scored 107 runs in the morning session alone.

England’s Commanding Position

England’s day began at 225-2 and built steadily on a strong foundation laid by an aggressive opening partnership of 166 runs between Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett. Root and Pope took over from there, both notching half-centuries as the Indian bowlers struggled to find breakthroughs on a docile Manchester pitch.

Root, however, had a couple of lucky escapes. He narrowly avoided being out LBW early in the session and was almost run out on 22 due to a miscommunication with Pope—Ravindra Jadeja just missing the chance to dismiss him.

Series Hanging in the Balance

With England currently leading the five-match series 2-1, the hosts are in prime position to build a significant first-innings lead and push toward a potential series-clinching win. Their commanding performance on Day 3 suggests momentum has firmly shifted in their favor.
