As Team India prepares for the pivotal fourth Test match against England in Manchester, the spotlight has shifted from the pitch to the players—particularly Karun Nair. Despite a strong return to the national squad on the back of stellar domestic performances, Nair’s recent outings with the bat have left much to be desired. His performance, or lack thereof, has sparked a wave of scrutiny from cricketing pundits, including former India spinner and commentator Murali Kartik.

Karun Nair’s Expectation

After being recalled to the Indian Test side, Nair was expected to cement his position with consistent performances. Instead, he finds himself under immense pressure. From starting at number six in the lineup during the Headingley Test to being promoted to number three in Edgbaston, the stage was set for him to shine. Yet, across three matches and six innings, Nair has accumulated a modest 131 runs at an average of just 21.83, with a top score of 40.

Kartik was candid in his remarks, emphasizing that while Nair fought hard to earn his spot back in the team, he hasn’t made the most of his second chance. “Has he grabbed the opportunity so far? I don’t think so,” Kartik said during a Cricbuzz discussion. He also pointed out that such opportunities are rare, and failing to convert starts into significant scores could lead to consequences—possibly losing his place in the XI.

Adding to the pressure is the presence of rising talent like Sai Sudharsan, who has been patiently waiting in the wings. With selectors and team management known for their performance-based decisions, the fourth Test might well be a do-or-die moment for Nair. Kartik emphasized that while continuity in team selection is important, it must be justified by output on the field. “If you are giving someone a chance based on experience, the returns must justify it,” he said.

The Indian think tank now faces a dilemma: stick with experience or pivot to emerging promise. With the Manchester Test starting on July 23, the final call could not only influence the outcome of the match but also potentially signal a turning point in Karun Nair’s international career.

Karun Nair’s journey back to the top tier of Indian cricket was hard-earned, but maintaining that spot requires more than just past records. As the clock ticks down to the next Test, the message from the cricketing community is clear—now is the time to deliver, or step aside.
