On Day 3 of the first Test match between England and India, Rishabh Pant was found guilty of breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct. He was penalized by the ICC for showing dissent at an umpire’s decision. This was Pant’s first offense in the last 24 months.

The wicketkeeper-batsman’s action was deemed a breach of Level 1, Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which relates to showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an international match. As a result, he was handed one demerit point, which has been added to his disciplinary record.

What Happened Between Rishabh Pant and Umpire?

The incident occurred on the final delivery of the 61st over during England’s first innings. Harry Brook had just hit a boundary off Mohammad Siraj’s delivery, and Rishabh Pant appeared visibly unhappy with the condition of the ball. He walked up to the umpire, Paul Reiffel, requesting a ball inspection. After checking, the umpire found no issue with the ball’s shape and returned it to Pant. However, Pant reacted by throwing the ball to the ground and walking away abruptly.

ICC Rules Level 1:

According to ICC regulations, a Level 1 breach of the Code of Conduct carries a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and a maximum penalty of a 50% fine of the player’s match fee, along with the addition of one or two demerit points to their record.

 

Those who laid the charge against Pant were:

The charge was leveled by on-field umpires Chris Gaffaney and Paul Reiffel, along with third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid and fourth umpire Mike Burns. However, no formal disciplinary hearing was required, as Pant accepted the sanctions proposed by Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees.
