In a historic display of grit and class, Shubman Gill scripted one of the finest innings in Indian Test history during the second Test against England at Birmingham. His mammoth knock of 269 runs, laced with 30 boundaries and 3 sixes, lifted India to a commanding total of 587 in 151 overs, marking their fourth highest total in Tests.

While Gill’s brilliance with the bat stole the spotlight, a heated on-field moment added spice to the drama. Just before tea on Day 2, Gill attempted a quick single but his partner Akash Deep hesitated. A slow response nearly cost India a wicket, prompting Gill to shout, “Dekh kya raha hai? Bhaag jaldi se!” — a rare emotional outburst from the otherwise calm Test skipper.

Despite this tension, Gill remained the cornerstone of India’s innings. At one stage, with India reeling at 211/5, a total of even 450 seemed out of reach. But Gill, along with Ravindra Jadeja (89) and Washington Sundar (42), stitched valuable partnerships of 203 and 144 runs to lift the side into a dominant position.

For England, Shoaib Bashir toiled hard and ended with 3/167, while Chris Woakes (2/81) and Josh Tongue (2/119) chipped in.

Gill’s innings now stands as the highest by an Indian captain in England and places him seventh among Indian batters in overall Test scoring charts. More than just numbers, it was a statement of character — technical mastery, mental resilience, and leadership under pressure.

As India continues to search for long-term leaders post-Kohli-Rohit era, Gill’s knock might just be the dawn of a new legacy in Indian Test cricket.
