Sri Lanka Approach to BCCI for Limited Over Series
In a significant development in the cricketing world, Sri Lanka Cricket has approached the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) with a proposal to host a six-match limited-overs series in August 2025. This move comes in response to the cancellation of India’s tour to Bangladesh, which was originally scheduled to take place from August 17 to 31, 2025. The postponed tour, planned to include three ODIs and three T20Is, has now opened a window for alternative bilateral series opportunities.
Sri Lanka is hoping to fill this void with a similar six-match white-ball series. The BCCI is currently reviewing the proposal, taking into account the tight scheduling constraints due to the upcoming Asia Cup, tentatively set for September 17–27, 2025. Final approval of the Asia Cup itself is pending clearance from the Government of India and is also influenced by political tensions, particularly concerning Pakistan’s participation.
Adding further intrigue, the proposed series could mark the return of cricketing icons Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to international play. Both players have recently restricted their appearances to the ODI format, stepping away from Tests and T20s. Their potential return would be a major draw for fans globally.
The BCCI is exercising caution, consulting with team management, coaching staff including head coach Gautam Gambhir, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar. These consultations, expected to happen during the Lord’s Test in London, will heavily influence the final decision.
The series, if approved, could serve as a valuable preparatory platform for both nations ahead of the Asia Cup and give cricket fans a rare treat during the August window. However, the scheduling must align with international commitments and domestic leagues, ensuring optimal rest and preparation for all involved.
Stay tuned as the BCCI evaluates the feasibility of this series in the context of a packed international calendar and political considerations.
